Honey from Meankitty.com

Honey from www.meankitty.com smells something bad.  Very bad.  It's probably the time travel one.

Random Trivia

Good news for fans of Dunvegas!  The authors of Beyond the Veil are considering a wedding themed anthology, a follow up to the 2007 anthology.  We hope.  Cross your fingers that everyone has the time and energy!

 SAMPLES & PARODIES

One of the things I like to do is give workshops to other authors about the wild, wonderful world of writing. My particular specialty is the contest judging workshop, for which I have written a number of painful prose pieces that should not be used to judge my skills as an author.

Stories

  • The Worst Christmas -- my YA holiday short story is currently (as of 1/30/12) free on some online retailers.
  • Dunvegas 2007 -- My short story "Dunvegas: Alien Attack!" is part of a shared world project by myself and other bloggers at the Samhain Paranormal Blog.  You can get the whole PDF free at: http://www.carolanivey.com/dunvegas/  My story is from the viewpoint of an alien hunter, Miranda Mellons, who finds more than she bargained for at the Dunvegas Hotel and Casino. The PDF itself is 18+ only, though my entry is the "tame" selection. If you are under 18 and interested, let me know and I will send you just my story.
  • Free Pie Day -- On my group blog The Otherworld Diner, some of us wrote Diner-set stories from writing prompts and shared them with the world.  Mine takes place on, you guessed it, free pie day at the Diner. As a warning, this treads the border of "fanfic".

Nuggets of Painful Joy from Workshops

Yes, these are supposed to hurt.  Why am I so addicted to writing "bad" instead of writing more stuff that is good and selling it?  I do not know the answer to that.

From My POV Workshop:

From my Contest Judging Workshops (samples to test judge):

If these workshop samples inspire you to create something similar, and similarly horrible, send it to me when you're done and I might post it on the site! If you would like to use any of these samples in a contest judging workshop of your own, please contact me about it first.

Other Samples

Note:  With one exception, in the samples posted here, I am not intentionally imitating any author, published or unpublished, and my choices of subgenres, characters, plot points, etc, are no way intended to offend or pass judgment.  In the case of the exception, my imitation is not meant as a criticism of said author's fiction but is a parody, which is protected by law.

Chapters Written for Avon FanLit in 2006

What is Avon FanLit, you ask?  In 2006, Avon hosted a contest where hundreds of writers had the chance to write a chapter in an upcoming Avon novella entitled "These Wicked Games".  Avon presented a premise each round, and everyone fell upon it like starving artists.  FanLit has recently been deleted, so I have posted three of my chapters here.  Let's just say I gave up after chapter 4!

  • Out of Time, Chick Lit Time Travel, Round 1 -- won a Fan's Choice Award for Best Cross-Genre chapter

  • Touch Not the Cat, Regency Paranormal, Round 2 -- got a lot of comments about did I know that book title had already been used by Mary Stewart?

  • A Man with a Plan, Regency Parody involving some Stooges, Round 4

If you're interested in the chapters Avon DID choose, you can actually purchase "These Wicked Games" (the final) at Harper Collins.
